Planet Madagascar:
Building sustainable forest communities
Our Mission
Planet Madagascar is a Canadian registered charity whose purpose is to build sustainable forest communities by conserving Madagascar's unique biodiversity while improving the lives of people living in Madagascar and empowering people in Madagascar and elsewhere to contribute to the preservation of Madagascar’s wildlife.
Our History
Planet Madagascar was inspired by PhD research on the impact of forest fragmentation on the survival of lemurs. While conducting research in Ankarafantsika National Park in North West Madagascar, Founder and Executive Director, Travis Steffens, witnessed uncontrolled forest fires, found evidence of illegal lemur hunting and forest resource extraction, and watched people in nearby impoverished communities dying from preventable diseases.
It became clear that to preserve habitat and help lemurs, it is imperative to work closely with the residents in Madagascar. Incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 2015 and now a registered Canadian charity, Planet Madagascar has worked closely with local communities to improve the lives of the Malagasy people and conserve lemurs and their habitat.
